My kids loved Young Farmers camp.  Every day they did something special:  feeding goats; holding brand new chicks;  the bees; t-shirts; making bread in the Cob oven; making their own butter etc etc... They thought the camp was awesome!!The leaders too were great. It was fabulous to be able to do horse camp in the am and farmer camp in the afternoon.

 About the Camp

An understanding of “Where does my food come from, and how is it grown?” will be the outcome of this fun and educational program for children ages 6 to 12.

Campers will discover the wonder of life on the farm while learning basic skills such as: caring for hens, goats, horses, ducks and other mysterious farm fauna;  and germinating seeds and growing, harvesting and preparing seasonal foods. Campers will also take part in farm fun recreational activities, farm crafts, and hands-on science experiments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will campers

 learn about?

Campers will enjoy discovering …

·  Food. How do plants grow? From seed germination to harvest to preparation, campers will gain hands-on experience in the cycle of food!

· The importance of soil and water. From composting to the micro and macro flora and fauna necessary for plant growth, children will get excited about what’s beneath their feet!

· Baking Bread in our Cob Oven. Young farmers will learn how to make their own bread or pizza from scratch—starting with milling the grain, harvesting their ingredients from the farm, and building the fire and cooking.

· Animal care. Campers will get the opportunity to handle and look after chickens, horses, and other farm animals.

Other special activities campers may take part in include: “bee-haviour”, cob building, popsicle making, t-shirts silk-screening, apple pressing, FarmFriend guest activities, and sooo much more.

 Testimonials

Dear Southlands Farmers,
[My daughter] thoroughly enjoyed the farm camp. She is the type of kid who has no problems being around a 1200 lb horse, however, is timid around other children.
The camp was a success for her as it was a great way for her to be around children with similar interests, and the animals and great staff helped bridge the gap with the other kids.
I think that nature smart is one of the 7 intelligences we learned of in Education at UBC. Your camp provides an opportunity for kids with an ease and insight into nature (plants/animals) to thrive. It also provides children with an opportunity to see for themselves the value of farming in our community, and that the land is important to protect. It has been almost a week now, and [she] seems to mention something daily that she learned from the camp. (Bees, holding the chicken/chicks, stinging nettle, First Nations, and Jordan in the pond).
The kids were having so much fun that I could hear [her] laughing from the street. I heard a neighbour mention that it made her day to hear the kids in the afternoons.

I hope that you and your crew are proud of the work that you are doing, of the impact on the children, and the bonds that you were able to create with them in such a short amount of time.
I want to thank you and one of the gals for giving [my daughter] understanding, and providing extra time with the chicks.

Both my girls had a fantastic time, and want to do it again next year, and would recommend it to anyone. Their favourite things were the pony riding, and spending time with the animals and learning about them. The girls liked the small group. Making and eating the pizza was also a favourite.

The girls said the only thing they would like for next year is more animals and more time with them. Believe it or not my girls also said they would like to have done more "chores" around the farm.

Thank you for a great camp, see you next year,

-Natasha (mother of Mia and Beth)

MY DAUGHTER LOVED THE FROGS.  SHE ALSO WAS INTRIGUED AND IMPRESSED BY THE KNOWLEDGEABLE VOLUNTEER IN A WHEELCHAIR AND WE FEEL THIS WAS GREAT EXPOSURE TO A COMMUNITY SHE DOESN'T INTERACT WITH MUCH.  THANK YOU.
